hello to my new visitor

WordPress.com, the service I use to host this webpage, has a great feature. If somebody searches for something in Google (or any other search engine), find my webpage and click on the link, I can see what their search was for. Most people who find this page search for “Derek Borchardt” or “St. Petersburg” or something.

Today a new guest came to my webpage. He searched for the following phrase in Google:

“cyclops russian baby in jar of alcohol?”

Whoever you are, Mr. Mystery Visitor, I hope you are satisfied with my website. I will try to add more Russian-cyclops-baby-related content in the future.

budget travel

I managed to get a ticket back to St. Petersburg. This is what budget travel looks like:

On Saturday the 24th, early in the morning I board a plane to Spain. I’ll spend about eight hours in a Spanish airport and then take a plane to Riga, the capitol city of Latvia. I arrive in Latvia around 10 pm — still Saturday. I have to leave the airport and find the city bus station. Around 1:30 in the morning on Sunday, I board a bus from Riga to Tallinn, Estonia. In Tallinn, I switch buses for one heading to St. Petersburg. I arrive in St. Petersburg in the afternoon on Sunday.

Fun times.

spontaneity

I decided I don’t want to stay in Tallinn. Just bought a plane ticket to Budapest, Hungary on the 6th. There’s a Russian embassy there also.

more catching up

I’m in an expensive internet cafe now. I still can’t get a reliable internet connection here. But anyways, need to check email and things, so I wanted to write more here…

A WEEKEND IN EKATARINBURG (CONT’D)

dsc02473

This is the local chapter of the Russian Communist party holding a rally in the center of Ekatarinburg. They want to return to the Soviet times. Most people think of them as a big joke. The rally had maybe twenty people there, and one old lady who kept stuffing propaganda in my hand.

Ekatarinburg was the most partying I’ve done since coming to Russia. It was an excellent time. Maria introduced me to all her friends, and after that, the weekend was basically one long party. After walking around and seeing the city all Friday, we went out that night to a few different bars. On Saturday night, we went to a friend’s flat for a small party, of about 15 people (pictured above).

Drank I had there I promised to introduce to Americans — “Batman.” Part hot coffee, part coke, part vodka. Drink warm. Surprisingly not disgusting.

After the party, we went out to the club until six in the morning.

On the last day of being in Ekatarinburg, Sunday, something happened that I’ve been dreading — I got sick for the first time in Russia. My nose ran constantly, I felt like doing nothing but sleep, and my stomach felt like it housed a demon. Maria and her friend Ann were infinitely patient with me while I was a terrible, sickly guest — and I am extremely grateful. Thank you! That night, I went to the train station at one in the morning. My train departed at 2 a.m. And the long, long train ride, across Russia began.

And I’ll write about that later. This internet cafe is god awful. The computer is so slow, it’s taken me ages to write this much — and I have no idea how expensive it will be.

Hello. I am still alive. I haven’t had access to the internet for a few days. I’ll put more pictures and notes up soon.

(“Good morning”)

I just woke up. I am in St. Petersburg, completely safe, and having an absolutely fantastic time. I’ve only been here one day (the plane arrived yesterday around 5:30 PM, and I stayed up until midnight or so last night), and there’s already so much to tell, I don’t know where to begin.

I don’t have time to write more now. When I have time, I’ll upload pictures and tell details.
